"The Great Gatsby" touches on many themes and issues that are still prevalent today. While my students may not live "grand" lifestyles, they do have some of the same issues as Nick and Daisy. They want to live the American dream and fit in, and they look for the easy ways to do it.
The desire for lust and greed alongside a lifestyle of alcohol abuse will make this novel relatable to the students, and help them see actions have consequences (sometimes even disastrous ones).
Not only will students learn the elements of literature but they will be able to use the theme of the novel and relate it to their lives.
