Students, more now than ever, need to be able to navigate different literacy formats. Having more non-fiction text( Time magazines and informational guided reading books) available will give me more resources to help them better understand the attributes of this genre and how to navigate and comprehend it.
Learning how to process informational text helps to set them up for success in a curriculum that they have to be able to problem-solve that kind of reading/writing, in all areas. Likewise, students will get a chance to pick their own topics of interest and therefore, will be more engaged. They will learn to use the table of contents, illustrations, labels, graphs, and glossary to aid in their understanding.
