Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. During independent work time they may choose a location in the classroom that works best for them. My student currently can sit on the floor, or at an alternative table.
With the items that I have selected for this project, students will have an opportunity to use a variety of different items to sit on while working. The stools will allow students to wiggle as they work, which is extremely beneficial after sitting for long periods during the day. The carpet will be a nice area to sit on while working, but will also be used during our reading meetings and during read alouds. Lastly, the cushions will provide them with a soft seat while working on the floor.
I have already noticed a positive change just by allowing students to move around. Students are more engaged in their work and less distruptive of their peers when given the choice of where to work.
