More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education.
The hope is that through a hands-on experience the kids will learn about a local ecosystem and the biotic and abiotic factors that allow the system to function. This is explored in two different classes I teach. In my biology class, students conduct a week long creek project in which they do detailed measurements, conduct chemical tests on the water and collect specimens to examine. In my advanced biology class, students collect and identify insects in order to conduct a biotic index assessment in which they use macroinvertebrates to determine water quality.
I have been using the same pairs of waders for the past twenty years and several of them have developed holes, despite many attempts to patch them. The new waders will allow the kids the opportunity to get into the water and explore safely and stay dry.
