A classroom without needed school supplies is hardly a learning environment where students can succeed. I have had students come to my classroom without proper clothing and empty stomachs. So it is little surprise when these same students don't have the necessary supplies to do their school work. This seems to be a common occurrence where my at-risk students don't have the proper resources to support their learning. Therefore a classroom without proper resources does not encourage a healthy learning environment.
Students have to share everything. This creates an issue when we are on a time limit for a project, or we have to wait so that three to four kids can share the same bottle of glue. I have been a teacher for 16 years, and I have never had a year where I had everything that I needed to run a successful classroom. Over the summer I watch for school ads so that I can buy supplies to help throughout the year. The money comes out of my own pocket, and I gladly do it knowing that I am helping my students. The problem is that there is still never enough. We send home letters two times a year asking for extra supplies that rarely come in.
When classrooms lack the supplies needed to provide learning opportunities then students are missing out. These missed opportunities result in lack of knowledge and material.
