The materials will make a huge impact in many ways. For the writing resource books, students will have research based, CCSS aligned practice that will enable them to develop the writing skills they need to succeed.
Without a curriculum, the middle school students I serve are severely underprivileged and severely behind. I often need a wealth of materials and resources to modify instruction to each group of students, and then for each individual student based on areas they need to grow.
With the poster materials, we can do many shared writing activities. In addition, I create many visual anchors for the students based on each genre we are working on. The room can be filled with resources that support a student's learning all year round. Chart paper is expensive, so it is hard to do shared writing with 5 different class sections every day. The chart paper would allow more of this collaborative work to happen. Additionally, students can learn from one another, which is usually how they learn best!
With the writing utensils, kids can have access to the materials they need to complete their work. Kids often times come into class with nothing--no pencils, notebooks, or pens. Because our class sizes are so big, we need several materials and we need them replaced often because the normal "wear and tear" on items even like pencils is extreme (imagine one pencil being used by 5 different students each day).
