As a first-year teacher in a Title I school, I've been providing a lot of supplies myself, but as important as books are- they're expensive. Our school provides many leveled readers, but they're simple stories and often quite short. My fourth graders complain the books are uninteresting and express their desire to read chapter books! It's already a tough task to motivate these kids when for many of them, reading is quite difficult.
I want them to realize books can take them beyond the walls of our classroom. The main goal of this project is help my students see the joy and excitement in reading. Many of them read at a low level, and I hope to show them reading CAN be exciting which will motivate them to become better readers.
Students will primarily use these books during their independent reading time, although I plan to use them for read alouds and points of discussions as well. I can't wait to see their faces light up when they see how much they have to explore!
