Students acquire number sense skills by engaging in fun, anxiety free hands-on activities. Number sense supports children in understanding what numbers mean, improving their performance of mental mathematics, and giving them the tools to look at problem solving in the outside world and make comparisons.
Children with good number sense enjoy playing with and exploring numbers and number relationships. As a result of these strategies, they can often find the most efficient solution to a problem.
I have requested manipulatives and a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card so I can purchase engaging resources for my students. My students will be given repeated opportunities to practice number sense in the small group or independent setting on a daily basis. Dice, number bonds, number frames and a variety of math manipulatives at each student's fingertips will motivate, inspire and get my students enjoying math and problem solving instead of typical drills and worksheets.
