The past two years have been the most challenging of my educational career. I struggle to find enough time to meet my students at whatever level they are at. I want desperately to help my kids who are struggling while at the same time I want to push my kids who are ready to move to the next level in their understanding.
One of the ways that we have helped all of our students in the past was a program called Study Island. It is a program that we used to target language arts and math skills. It has videos, practice, games, and assessments that can all be tailored to meet individual students’ needs. We have used it for several years with much success. Unfortunately, our school was unable to provide the program this year. That is why my project is asking for funding for a 1-year subscription for the 70 students in my block.
This funding would allow all three teachers in my block to provide instruction and practice for important skills in math and reading that are targeted to each individual student. The program would allow students who are not understanding a skill to drop down to lower-level skills and work his/her way up. It also (just as importantly) allows students who already have mastered a skill to work on higher level skills.
Study Island is not used as our only instruction, but rather as a supplement to complement our instruction and make it more individualized. It has allowed my team to target specific skills for individual students in the past. It is a wonderful program and I would be so grateful to be able to have it funded for my students and my amazing team teachers!
