These books are about giving my minority students the chance to see themselves in literature! Too often, classroom libraries are filled with "classics" that are used for centuries and fail to encapsulate the real challenges presented to the 21-century high school reader. In my high school English classroom, each book is carefully labeled and stored for easy access to students. Students are allowed to check out the books and take them home to read--even over the summer!
I have personally watched my 9th-12th grade students take on a greater love of reading by having a classroom library that is both relevant and available.
In recent years, I have had more students asking for more diverse authors and characters that they can identify with and see themselves in. Please consider contributing to help build my library to include more texts that are relevant to all students!
