Fiction reading is directly related to reader empathy. My goal is to raise that level of empathy with my students. By reading books written from perspectives that may differ from their own, my students may be able to apply this level of acceptance and empathy to their own lives. My hope is also that my BIPOC students finally feel represented in my classroom.
Not only is gaining empathy from reading necessary, but also that all my students feel represented by the texts we read in my class. I have chosen three different books each with different perspectives. I have chosen books that deal with racism, mental health, and family issues; issues all my students are currently dealing with in their own lives either directly or indirectly.
