Every morning students get to "shop" for books out of my classroom library. Students choose books at their individual reading level. The books they choose for the week are the books they will read, try out their new strategies they have learned, and have discussions with their reading partner. Students who are excited about reading, who also have high quality engaging books at their fingertips daily, will grow and develop as readers. Students will have increased opportunities to read, build stamina for reading, and develop a daily habit and lifelong learning of reading. As with any task, the students must be motivated in order to be successful.
All students deserve to find a book in which they can find a reflection of themselves and their experiences. If this project is funded, students will have more of a selection of books to chose from. Students will be more enthusiastic and engaged if they could relate to characters like them.
