These materials will be utilized to provide a safe area within each of our classrooms where students can go to calm themselves/take a mental break when needed.
We have seen a tremendous increase in the social and emotional needs of our students and understand the importance of addressing these issues within the classroom before expecting the child to be able to focus on learning what 2 + 2 is. Our students come to school with many issues they're dealing with outside of school. It is our goal to be more sensitive to these issues and these needs of our students in order to better serve them here at school.
Providing social and emotional support for our students within the classroom is hugely important to us as we see their needs continue to increase in these areas. In order to best meet our students' needs, we really need to start intervention in this social and emotional area in the general education classrooms; that is our purpose with these 'Peace Corners'. We would like to see students learn to self-regulate (with guided teacher instruction) and be able to manage their emotions without ever having to leave the classroom and miss out on instruction. Our goal is for our students to get as much time in the general education classroom as possible.
