Through gardening my students will learn the importance of nutrition, adding vegetables to their diet, setting up tables and charts for planting, watering, and harvesting what they grow. They will be introduced to the vocabulary necessary for the tasks required. Various skills will be obtained through the diversity of activities. My students will learn the joys of "playing" in the dirt away from the digital world for a portion of each day. They will learn skills not available to them in the apartments, motels, and rentals where many of them live. Learning how to plant, grow, and harvest these plants will teach them responsibility for something outside themselves. They will gain a sense of ownership and responsibility in what they do. Through gardening, they will learn time management skills. When this project takes off, they will have produce to take home to share with their families and friends. This will give my students a sense of community pride. Through this project, my students will connect with others by being able to share a project of which they are proud.
