My students are a group of eager-to-learn second graders that attend an under-resourced Empowerment School in Pennsylvania. They spend the majority of their day in my self-contained elementary school classroom focusing on phonics, literacy, writing, and numeracy. My students and their families come from many places including: West Africa, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and all over the United States. Our classroom's mix of identities and experiences provides us with frequent opportunities to examine the individualities and commonalities of the many cultural communities that surround our school. Ready with opinions and ideas, my students tackle school objectives and assignments with a dynamic desire to improve and learn.
