My students need to build independence as well as communication level. They will be in charge of finishing projects with guidance as well as using organizational strategies to move from being non-verbal to an effective communicator. In my classroom we have what are called work tasks. They need to finish a set number of tasks before they can get a reinforcement. The organization tower will help with this so they can complete tasks independently. Set tasks are assigned and need to be completed the moved to the done section. We use markers and laminated pictures to designate these different areas. This year at our school we are required to keep all doors closed and locked. The doorbell will help us to hear someone at the door so the student with that job can answer and be our greeter. They will use either pictures, written words, or utterances to communicate with support. We use many visuals in class that need to be laminated to stand up to the routine use. Using these visuals alleviates most of the behaviors that have appeared in other classes because most of them were caused by not being understood. It goes along way to just be understood and be able to get your needs met.
