A document camera helps enhance my students' accessing all curriculum areas across the school day. As a teacher, I can use small copies of fiction or nonfiction books and turn them into big books that students can fully explore and engage in by looking closely at details by noticing the pictures and words more clearly.
In the area of literacy, I can use small copies of books to help enhance literacy skills. This way, I would have a diversity of text choices available to students to enjoy and engage in. In writing, the document camera can be used to project my demo writing samples, so that all students can see and learn from. I can also use the smart board tools to highlight and turn it into an interactive experience. I can also show model writing pieces from students that the class can enjoy and learn from.
In the area of math, I can model mini lessons when I use small manipulatives such as chips, cubes or pennies. In addition, the document camera can make small charts and recording sheets larger and visible for all students to see and engage in.
I currently have students in my classroom that have very short attention spans. Engaging these types of students needs to be quick, purposeful, and tied to the lesson at hand. A document camera will help the students organize information and pay attention quickly.
As a Kindergarten teacher for over 18 years and an instructional literacy lead for my grade, I know the importance of literacy in a classroom. Students are more engaged when materials are larger and they are able to focus in more quickly to attend effectively to the content.
