The use of books in the classroom will help students improve their reading ability, love of reading, and consequently improve their test scores. Through the use of novels in the classroom, my students explore themes, complete multimedia presentations, and make connections to characters and life situations. My first year on this campus, we only had one novel in the curriculum. By the second year, we added two more in On Level English and read a total of six in Pre-AP. I have seen tremendous improvement in my students across the board as a result of reading books! At the end of the school year, the kids are actually excited about reading.
However, our library is very limited and despite many attempts at funding through the district for more books, I am fighting an uphill battle to put books in the hands of students who are in desperate need of them.
Since my students are 85% low SES, we are unable to ask them to purchase books on their own, and the class sets available through the district often go missing and every year, my team and I have to scramble to get book copies for our students on our own.
