In a school where parents, the majority of them single parents, struggle to afford the needed school clothes, it is hard to see any child go home with paint or other art messes on his or her clothes. It is important to have a good apron that is waterproof, too many a time paint seeps through the fabric of an old men's shirt. As an art teacher I have thought twice and even put off using paints or other messy materials for lack of proper clothing protection for the students. However, the joy of painting whether it be on paper or boxes turned into models of castles or birdhouses cannot be better expressed than as seen on the happy faces and quiet focus of children painting.
