The Apple iPad is necessary to program the LEGO Education Coding Express train that I have already purchased for my Kindergarten classroom. My iPad is outdated so I am unable to teach the children how to program the train. I am using the Coding Express to address many curriculum components including STEM; social studies standards; and local transportation history (Springfield, MA).
Walnut Street to Federal Street is a STEM/Social Studies unit that introduces the railway to children and allows them to build and program their own train through the Coding Express. This hands-on activity gives them an opportunity to experience the curriculum content at a deeper level. This lesson is the beginning in a series of lessons that will introduce elementary-aged children to local transportation history (Springfield, MA). Mulberry to Walnut introduces the children to the early years when product was moved using horses and wagons. Walnut to Federal introduces the railway to children. Children would have to experiment with different LEGO pieces and programming to help the train move. Federal to State is the movement of the product from Springfield, MA out into the world. The rail line entering Springfield was the New Haven Railroad. Primary sources can be used throughout this unit: photographs, railroad maps. This unit embraces STEM components and also addresses many of the social studies standards for this grade level.
