At our new school, there are no music materials available. Learning to play instruments in music class gives students a tangible goal that they can work at throughout the entire year. It gives them a sense of accomplishment that through hard work they can accomplish a long-term goal. Playing instruments may even become a life-long hobby and outlet for students. It teaches perseverance, self-discipline, and grows confidence. Working with a vulnerable population, this opportunity to learn to play musical instruments could have a very positive impact on their school experience. I know that many students have expressed that playing musical instruments is their favorite part of school, and I hope to be able to give this opportunity to my new students. As a pianist myself with extensive piano-teaching experience, my resources would be best used teaching piano, although these are the most expensive instruments to acquire.
