My students come from economically disadvantaged families and most live in apartment buildings with extended family. 94% of my students are Hispanic and many were not born in the United States or are 1st generation Americans who are learning English as their second language. These students are bright and eager to learn but most of them don't have many experiences outside of their neighborhood that help them make those necessary connections to the curriculum they are learning. They need to be greatly front-loaded with this information.
