We will practice reading these books containing sight words in small groups so that our students feel confident reading them alone over and over again before they take them home. Kindergartners are required to learn the first 50 sight words in order to be reading at the state required level by the end of the school year.
The ability to call these books their own promotes a sense of control in a home where they control very little of what they see and hear. Please help me show my students that there is a world that they can be a part of by reading for information and enjoyment. Your gift will provide temporary relief from the trauma associated with living in poverty. It will motivate them to master skills that will help them help themselves. As readers, they can help break the generational cycle by reading to younger siblings, cousins, and friends.
