Our school is a fully collaborative severely handicapped special day class. This means that my students spend about half of their time with me and my assistance for their core subjects and the other half of their time in collaborative general education classrooms with the direct support of myself and my assistance. Our middle school class includes students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade age ranges with all varied academic ability levels. My students because of their unique learning styles need multi sensory lessons that most often include visual and kinesthetic aids to support their learning.
The complexity and variety of their special needs require each student to have an individualized educational plan. They especially enjoy working together in small groups with lessons modified to their specific ability levels. The group work gives them the chance to work on social and behavior interactions with their peers while simultaneously making progress academically.
