All good teaching requires using multiple strategies, resources and tools, so that all learners can access the curriculum - which in this case is non-contact forces. Attraction and repulsion of electric charges are one of three fundamental non-contact forces in nature. Because the Next Generations Science Standards all start with a phenomenon, through the scientific process and an eLab presentation, I will demonstrate how a plasma ball can light lightbulbs without any contact.
This will spark the minds of the students, thereby pulling their interest and inquisitive mindset into the non-contact forces unit which they will engage in virtually and then in person - when it's safe to do so. They will then use the scientific process and the inquiry-based learning to connect what they observe to concepts like Newton's Three Laws of Motion. The Electricity and Magnetism Experiment STEM kit will teach them about Series Circuits, Parallel Circuits, Fruit Batteries, and ultimately lead them to create Electromagnets. They will be assessed summatively on their ability to create models and formatively on their ability to draw circuits. The electric circuit kits will then connect the electricity with magnetism. That will lead them to the maglev trains. The maglev kits provide hands-on examples on how we can manipulate non-contact forces using both electricity and magnetism to move large objects at great speeds. Through this scaffolding process of linear investigation students will intuitively obtain higher order thinking skills and connect what is happening in their homes to the classroom, to the world around them.
