I asked a student one day "what is half of 5?" The student looked at me and said, "you cannot take half of 5, only 4 or 6." I asked the student "what if you share 5 dollars with a friend, how much will you both get in equal amounts?" The student said, "i'll take 3 and he will get 2." After this moment I realized that the students lack fundamental math skills that is probably the main factor in why they cannot understand difficult material. I want to designate 5-7 minutes each day addressing these gaps. No word problem, no common core, simply basic skills that will allow students to quickly understand basic mathematical life questions.
