The books I am requesting are very different. The first book goes with a series of books by Gary Paulsen. The students have read Hatchet, so the next book they would read is The River. This book was written to help with the ending in Hatchet. This book will take the students on many adventures. The themes of survival, nature, making choices, and self-discovery can be explored in the classroom. Also, the students will be doing an author study on Gary Paulsen.
The second book, The Outsiders, is about class conflict. It's message is that class conflict is pointless, unwarranted, and destructive. Ponyboy learns many life lessons throughout the novel, so students will be able to identify and elaborate on these lessons. They will be able to go deeper and explain and relate them to now.
