Using a balance literacy approach, students will use the library center each week. The center will be organized by genre, authors, and monthly themes that coincide with all areas of content. Students will visit the library center twice a week to select books to learn and explore during independent reading time or with a buddy. Students will not be limited by levels. This is a free book center where any book is their level. Students will be encouraged to read using pictures, sight words, or make up their own stories. The bright colors of the cart, bins, and pocket chart will draw attention to the library center and excite students to visit.
An effective Kindergarten library needs to be kid-friendly and have a variety of resources to explore. This cart and materials will allow me to build a library that excites and entices new learners to try a good book. As seen in the picture, my current book shelf needs some TLC (or nearest trash.) The colorful bins in this project will make it much easier for student to see all the available resources.
