My students have a hard time staying on their current carpet dots. They do not have an actual idea of what area is theirs to sit in and which is not. They need a concrete representation and they can get this from having a carpet with set squares on it. They can learn to respect other's space and can have their own respected.
As far as the cubbies, several on my kiddos do not have backpacks. This makes it difficult for them as they have nowhere to store the few belongings they have such as jackets, lunchboxes, snacks, water bottles, etc. Several of these students live in one room with their whole family so at home they don't really have a space that is theirs. I want them to have this at school. I want them to have a place that they can keep their stuff safe and be able to say it is their own space.
