Some of my students have never had a music class. Most had never been included in a performance until they came to our school. They LOVE music, and so many of them have grown into who they are because of music. They are exciting and hard working and exceed expectations-expectations from home, of society and some of them even surprise themselves. They overcome many hardships and even through all of that, they come to school and accomplish amazing tasks. Most of them come from deprived socioeconomic backgrounds and live in the heart of the projects in New York City. Our school is an all girl school in New York City. We try to make available to them opportunities they would never normally encounter. It is our mission to help them develop into worldly, creative and sophisticated young women who feel as though they can take on and overcome any obstacle thrown in their paths. Singing is often one of those obstacles. Through it all, my students shine through and exude pride.
