The largest area of struggle for my students has consistency been literacy skills. The texts that students are presented with through our curriculum as often not engaging. The past two years I have done a read aloud using Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and each year my students go crazy for it! They actually beg me to read! I would love to have a class set of these books in order to allow the students to follow along in the excitement of the story. This also sets them on the course for discovering the other amazing works of Rick Riordan. I currently have 5 students reading the continuations of his series! The exciting adventures of Percy Jackson gives the students the unique opportunity to compare the book to the movie, they always prefer the book!!
Time for Kids gives my students the opportunity to learn about other cultures and ways of life, all while learning how to read and comprehend nonfictional text. A subject area they are never very fond of. Time for Kids also presents me the ability to tie nonfiction reading in with several of the science and social studies topics, causing the kids to be more competent and excited about three areas of study using one tool!
