My school is located in an area that is surrounded by homeless people, poverty and violence. I worry that my students feel the stress of their neighborhood and as they get older they could succumb to the pressures and bad influences of their surroundings, as I have seen happen before. Being a lifelong Yoga practitioner, I know the benefits of Yoga for a healthy body and mind and I would like to pass that on to my students by practicing Yoga weekly with them. There are many studies that show the benefits of Yoga on children of all walks of life. I plan on practicing Yoga with them on Friday afternoons for 30-45 minutes. I feel that by giving my students this opportunity it will give them a chance to create a positive mindset and a positive way to cope with their adverse surroundings.
Below is a list of ways that Yoga benefits students in the classroom taken from Greater Good Magazine, Science Based Insights for A Meaningful Life:
1. Emotion Regulation
2. Better academic Performance
3. Reduced Anxiety and Tension
4. Resilience to Stress
5. Fewer Behavior Problems
6. Physical Well-Being
7. Teacher Well-Being and Better Classroom Climate
I hope that you will consider donating to my students and classroom. Thank you.
