Right now, our library is filled with books which could take a student to "another place," but the library is rarely visited. By purchasing these items, I can provide the students a safe location where they can settle down and "read" a book. Additionally, the pillows are light enough to be moved to a location within the room where the child may feel safer sitting.
As these diverse students come from at-risk, low-income families, they are unexposed to the "comforts of home." By providing these new materials, the students have the opportunity to explore the materials and get comfortable in a safe space. Additionally, these materials can provide the traumatize students with an area where they can calm down.
