My goal as an educator is to lead by example and to teach my students to contribute to the ripple effect of spreading kindness. Our club was formed with the goal of contributing to their community in creative and positive ways. Founded in 2016 by an 8th grader who wanted to leave her positive legacy behind, this club has fundraised and donated over $1000 in the past 3 years. In their first year, they donated $500 to a local hospital. In the second year, they donated $500 to our school nurse for first aid and hygiene products. This year, they created "blessing bags" that were filled with toiletries and other basic needs for families in the neighborhood surrounding our school.
Our campus club’s current goal is to find ways to support underserved students who attend our own school. For example, we took a random sampling of responses to the following prompt: If your family received a $100 gift, what would you do with it? Many students shared that they would use the $100 to donate to local orphans, hospitals, or the homeless. Others wanted to give the money to their parents for bills and groceries or help their peers, who they know are struggling. I would like to begin their journey of kindness with this project by helping students who need basic items like uniforms, shoes, and school supplies. We are hoping that your generosity will inspire our students to pay it forward.
