A carpet in the classroom brings students together for learning new concepts. It is magical because it is where the learning takes place. It brings out the best in their ability to work, listen, and learn more closely together as a community. They are not sitting separately at their desks for independent learning, but they are all in one common spot; on the carpet.
The carpet is our meeting place as like the conference room is the meeting place for adults. Students love to come to the carpet to hear books read to them and then have discussions. The ability to meet and listen to books on the carpet allows students to enjoy the places the books magically take them.
Students also use the carpet to learn new concepts without feeling as if they are separated from each other within the classroom. They can, more easily, share their thinking and work with their elbow buddy. The carpet also gives students the opportunity to relax and read a book independently.
