I plan on using flexible seating options to allow students to be in a safe and comfortable learning environment. I notice students constantly wiggling in their chairs, tipping in their chairs (which is not safe), or simply opting to not use a chair at all. In order to increase students' attention and motivation to learn, I plan on using several different seating options for students to choose from and use during the school day. Flexible seating movement has several physical, emotional, and academic benefits such as choice, movement, sensory input, and motivation.
Giving students flexible seating options teaches students to become proactive by being more aware of the choices they make that help them be successful learners. If students feel they can concentrate better with a seat cushion to wiggle around on, they should have access to those necessary tools. If a student needs to move to a different spot in the classroom and not be distracted, s/he should not be confined by the mobility of a classroom desk. Students will benefit from having flexible seating options to help them be successful learners.
