Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, as well as whole group instruction, students choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, our students choose to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, using lap various kinds of lap desks, sitting on saucer seats or laying on the floor with a clipboard. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. We have noticed amazing differences in our students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. Since we had opportunity to see how well our seating options were impacting the learning of our students, especially those with IEP’s, we have decided to expand our flexible seating. We have found that our students are more focused, more engaged, and attain a better understanding of material when given the choice to learn where they are comfortable. The products that we have selected will help our students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
