I am requesting a class set of whisper reading phones. My second graders, who are primarily second language learners, read daily. Some are still developing a strong basis of foundational reading skills.
I want my students reading time to be as productive as possible. This means students need to be reading words accurately and utilizing reading strategies. For instance, the short vowel sounds for "e" and "i" are very similar. Reading words incorrectly impacts the meaning of the text and it takes away from the joy of reading. When students are using the phones they can hear themselves much clearer. Thus making it easier for them to self correct mistakes-just like what good readers do!
The reading phones help students hear the word correctly and then they are able to produce the word accurately and then make meaning of the text-thus creating strong readers.
