I currently serve students who come from complicated backgrounds and tough environments. In addition, they often have their own internal struggles due to a variety of learning disabilities, developmental delays, and emotional disturbances. With this project I hope to be able to give them a safe creative outlet to help them express themselves.
As an occupational therapist it is my responsibility to empower students to reach their full potential and realize their special skills and strengths.
My students this year are having a very difficult time coping with a very frustrating curriculum as well as unstable home lives. When they are faced with a challenge in school they will often melt down or shut down. I have been working with students using technology to help them express themselves either through writing or graphic arts, however their creations get stuck in the computer as we currently have no way of printing things out for them. I would absolutely love a means to print and proudly display their creations around our room and throughout the school. I know it will make them feel proud as well!
It seems like such a simple thing, however I cannot emphasize enough what a difference having a printer and laminating machine will make in their daily lives. I cannot wait to see my students utilize these supplies as they grow and learn how to better express themselves and manage their emotions.
