My name is Bailey Buchanan. I currently teach 2nd grade at an elementary school in Durant, Oklahoma. In 2019, our life as teachers was changed and so were the lives of our students.
My current students have never had a normal year of school. I am seeing lots of struggles with phonics and other literacy skills needed for 2nd grade. This year when school began many of my students were below grade level by a significant amount, and I am working to build phonemic awareness and better reading skills in my classroom. I was lucky enough to be able to enroll in a literacy training program through the Oklahoma State Department of Education and that is helping me feel more confident in my ability to teach my students to be more successful readers.
The majority of my students are struggling with reading foundational skills, and I am working on building those skills with the materials I can afford to purchase. These resources are greatly needed to help my student academically recover from the pandemic and require materials that are not usually found in 2nd grade classrooms. Many of the tools to help my students are expensive and can add up quickly, so I am asking for your help in obtaining supplies that would help me build my students' confidence and love for reading.
I will be purchasing Amazon fire tablets so that each of my students will be able to use a tablet in our classroom setting to help build on the skills they are lacking. I use websites and apps such as blooket, kahoot, and story works for both whole group and small group learning. My students will be so grateful to be able to use the tablets to help them grow academically.
