The materials for this project center around increasing my children's fluency in reading, speaking/listening, and phonemic awareness. These skills are so important for them to learn early on and the big books will be a tremendous help! Lessons center around decoding, concepts of print, word recognition, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Another important aspect they will learn by using the big books have to do with speaking and listening skills including listening and speaking strategies, as well as written and oral language conventions.
My students will use these not only as whole group lessons but they also love using them in our choice areas to practice being teachers themselves. They use these big books to teach their friends all about reading and all about the book. It is so amazing seeing them become teachers by using the big books and they get super excited about it!
Reading is so important and these big books will aid in increasing my students love for reading. I love seeing their faces light up when we read a big book together. For some of them at the beginning it is a struggle but these big books really help them learn reading and phonics skills by repetition.
