A typical day in 8th grade ELA looks like this: a quick review discussion or question, a small 10 to 15 minute lesson, group collaboration for practice, and independent practice and reading. Some days, a small group is pulled to reinforce learning and practice together with me or a student leader.
Currently, traditional classroom structure hinders the success of each of these activities and lessons. With a move to flexible seating, our days can look more like this: a class sized group on these fabulous (and sturdy!) stools for the review and lesson, move our new stools around to small groups for the collaboration, and spread out in the room for independent work! Contributing to this project will give us the first step towards a modern and comfortable learning environment.
