Next year, I plan to implement #classroombookaday, which is a commitment to read aloud a picture book every day of the school year to my students to help foster classroom community and joy of reading. The challenge is about sharing and exposing students to many different picture books. We want to keep the interest and motivation high and need to add more books to our library.
According to Scholastic's Kids & Family Reading Report, "Only 17% of parents of kids ages 9–11 read aloud to their children. Yet 83% of kids ages 6–17 say being read to is something they either loved or liked a lot". With your help, I can help change that.
Reading aloud is imperative to young readers because it builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about.
