Reading books transports my students across the borders of our small town and into the lived experience of so many Americans that would remain unknown and foreign to them. Books give my students a window into the experiences of voices historically silenced in our community and world.
Reading of more a inclusive world cultivates a consciousness that is critical to our democracy and my students' humanity. Students will read these books in my American literature classroom as part of our reading curriculum. Reading these powerful stories independently and in groups will open their hearts and minds to a world beyond the boundaries of our small homogeneous world.
