The City Elementary Monthly Book Box will provide students with culturally relevant books that focus on urban situations and plot lines featuring ethnically and culturally diverse characters.
When providing students with role models or character examples, it is extremely important that they can "see themselves" and relate to the character on some level--whether it's based on ethnicity, culture, or socioeconomic level. It is important to pay attention to the "hidden curriculum" we are teaching--in other words, what is deliberately left out of our content.
When curriculum fails to include diverse ethnic characters and real-life people, it communicates to students that these people are less important. My goal is to maximize the representation of ethnically and culturally diverse citizens in my curriculum so as to accurately represent the wonderfully diverse country that we live in!
