Because I teach high school students, I often feel like the four years that we have our students, are the last chance we have to help them develop into lifelong readers. It is so important for students to read high quality contemporary literature because students can better form their own relationships with what they are reading. Students need opportunities to develop empathy for others and to understand complex situations and emotions. All students deserve to read something that is important to them. The Sun Does Shine: How I found Life and Freedom on Death Row is a riveting account of Anthony Ray Hinton's experience of being wrongfully accused of crimes he didn't commit and being sentenced to the death penalty. Hinton's story reveals the injustices of the legal system but, is also a testament to hope and humanity in the worst of circumstances. Room by Emma Donoghue is told from the perspective of a five year old boy who is being held captive in a small room along with his mother. This book is about the strength of the bond between parent and child and the resilience of the human spirit.
