We would like to provide workshops to teach and model strategies in which the parents could practice with each other and then with their children within the same time frame of the workshop. We want to help excite both the parents and the homeless children about reading.
We also want to empower the parent with knowledge amidst the pain and reality of their daily life situation. This project will foster a love of reading in both children and their parents. These families have developed a trust with our Resource Center. Collaboration between guest speakers/trainers, our school district, our homeless children and families, and community volunteers would be integral to the success of this project.
We know that literacy is essential to the success of a child's school career. Parents and children are in need of modeling, instruction, practice, support, and praise. Together, we are their resource!
We served 537 homeless families in 09/10. We will serve over 1,000 homeless families in 10/11.
