The students in my classroom love the flexible seating choices that I have to offer. But they are limited at best. I know that a flexible seating design would create an atmosphere where discussion and collaboration are more natural.
Thus, I want to offer a classroom that wraps around my students like a big fluffy blanket, enveloping them in warmth and coziness. By offering a homey, library atmosphere, I am creating an environment in the classroom that emphasizes comfortable choices and collaboration. My students will be able to gather around using the bean bags, pull up the fluffy pillows and work on the carpet, or even create a group using the benches.
Consequently, by supporting the need for my students to be social and allowing them to share their ideas and build their knowledge together, I am creating a sense of belongingness and a culture where students can work together on a task, combining their skill sets and learning from each other.
Once I put the students at the center of their reading and writing experience, they will see the value of investing their time and energy into both.
