Most students come into English class dreading the thought of reading and writing. Their idea of a typical English class is reading unfamiliar classics, analyzing poems from dead people from long ago, and writing until your hand cramps! While these things are important, I want my students to be exposed to so many other diverse stories and open their eyes to a whole new world!
Representation of different cultures is important, and purchasing these independent reading novels will help my students see that kids all around the world have their share of struggles as well, and that English class is more than just focusing on things from the past.
Each title was selected for either the diversity of its characters or of its author. These books show my students that reading can be both a window to another world and a mirror of their own lives.
