In order to learn how to become better readers, thinkers, and conscientious members of our society, my students desperately need a wide variety of books that they can dive into with their peers for an upcoming book circle unit.By reading these books through a critical eye, my students will explore how effective stories are crafted by their authors. They will be specifically looking at plot structure, character development, dialogue, and the author's prose.
Doing so will empower them to read literature more critically than they have before, and prepare them for their final year of high school as well as their later academic careers in college. Long-term social change is enacted not by catchy political slogans or through committed educators. It happens through our youth reading books, educating themselves, and maintaining a society built upon the ideals of equity. My students need these books. Be a part of that change. Make it happen.
